The Dogs Trust Visit Fair Hill PS

5th Feb 2025
This week classes P1-P7 attended informative workshops hosted by the Dogs Trust. The session focused on teaching the children how to behave safely and respectfully around dogs, ensuring that everyone could enjoy a positive experience when interacting with our furry friends.

The workshop covered essential topics, starting with how to approach a dog. The children learned that it’s important to always ask the owner for permission before petting a dog, especially if it’s a dog they don’t know. They also discovered the best way to approach a dog, which is calmly and slowly, allowing the dog to get used to their presence before making contact.

The students were also taught to recognize when a dog may not want to be approached. They learned how to look for signs that a dog may be feeling scared or upset, such as a wagging tail, raised ears, or a stiff body. By understanding these signals, the children can respect the dog’s space and avoid making it feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

The workshop also emphasized the importance of treating dogs with kindness and respect. The children practiced how to gently pet a dog and snuggle it and not to hug it tightly.

Everyone left the workshop with a better understanding of how to keep both themselves and the dogs they meet happy and safe. A big thank you to the Dogs Trust for such an educational and enjoyable experience!

We look forward to more opportunities like this to help the children build positive relationships with animals.
